Where Can I Get It?
Windows XP SP3 isn’t out yet but those curious users who can never wait for the final build you can get the latest RC2 version from Windows update by running a script available for downloaded from Microsoft’s Download Center. It’s worth noting you need to clean off RC1 or any other SP3 build before the script will do you any good.
What Does Service Pack 3 Do For Me?
Unless you are an enterprise user service pack 3 brings nothing notable to the Windows XP experience you didn’t already receive via Windows Update. Service Pack 3 does little more then roll these updates into one package to minimize hassle for those doing a fresh install. For those of you asking is that really all it is?
Here is a summary of the new features:
1.) Network Access Protection compatibility – A feature that allows Windows XP machines to interact with the NAP feature in Windows Server 2008. .
2.) Product Key-less install option – Just Like Windows Vista, new XP with SP3 installs can proceed without entering a product key during Setup.
3.) Kernel Mode Cryptographics Module – A new kernel module that “encapsulates several different cryptographic algorithms,” according to Microsoft.
4.) “Black hole” router detection algorithm – Now has the ability to ignore network routers that incorrectly drop certain kinds of network packets.
Summary
As you can see, these new features mean next to nothing to home users but those who haven’t updated anything automatically since SP2 will find a more reliable and secure operating system that inherits many features that at one point were intended to be Vista exclusive. The result is an OS that is harder to get people to throw out then that old ratty sweater most salvation army’s would pass on.
