What Is Windows 7 / Vista 64 Bit And Can I Run It?

The transition from 32 to 64 bit hardware happened pretty quickly and mostly nobody noticed. AMD was first out of the gate with 64 bit processors and today its very difficult to buy a new piece of hardware that isn’t 64 bit capable. The problem now isn’t “if” your new hardware is 64 bit, the real question is will it be compatible with a 64 Bit OS. Since the release of Vista Service Pack 1 I have decided to run Vista 64 bit full time with the intention of reporting my findings here. I’m a power user who likes to push hardware as much as possible so naturally games and benchmarking tools make it to the top of the pile when I install new programs on my OS. Here is a comprehensive list of everything I use on a daily basis and have tested to be compatible with Vista 64.

Why Would I Want To Run A 64 Bit Operating System?

- To take full advantage of 64 Bit CPU’s
- Allow for additional Ram above 4GB to be recognized. Remember even graphics card memory can cut into the 4 GB total.
- Wide scale 64 bit adoption will be required before developers can code for it. Game consoles could soon outpace PC performance because they can evolve into 64 Bit environments more freely then Windows.
- Windows 7 will likely be the last Microsoft 32 bit OS
- Most 32 Bit programs are still compatible in 64 bit and those that aren’t can run in virtual machine environments.

    Hi

How do you know Empire: Total War works on Vista 64 bit? They released the system specs yesterday and stated minimum requirements were XP 32 or Vista 32. Does it definitely work on Vista 64 too? I hope so, that’s what I run!

Does Grand Theft Auto IV work well with vista 64?

I’m quite late for this thread but…

You listed Company of Heroes as being compatible with Vista 64, however, in the Vista compatibility page of Microsoft, it’s marked as “?”, meaning, Microsoft doesn’t know for sure if it’s compatible with their Vista 64 OS. Moreover, I read several forums and the info I get are conflicting: some say COH would work well with Vista 64, while others say it doesn’t. Now I don’t know which to believe.

    Any ideas?

    Follow-up question:

And how about Warcraft 3 and Frozen Throne?

    Thanks.

I’m trying to install Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War: Soulstorm on my vista 64bit system. I downloaded it direct2drive. Unfortunately, when i click on the setup application, I receive the following error:

The version of this file is not compatible with th eversion of Windows you’re running. Check your computer’s system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher.

I’ve been looking around forums for months. Someone, please help!

I just bought DragonAge-Origins by Bioware – neither the guy at GameStop or even BioWare’s website could definitively tell me that the game would work… of course I WAS informed that if the seal was broken it cannot be returned, so I could try to install it on my own, but at MY risk. Thanks a bunch!
